Student arrested after weapons and marijuana found in car at Wilmington high school
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One student faces several charges after weapons and drugs were found in a vehicle at Laney High School.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s Spokesman, Lt. Jerry Brewer, says they arrested 17-year-old John Leslie King.
Lieutenant Brewer says it all began when the assistant principal found three students inside a car in the parking lot smoking marijuana.
The investigation led to a fourth student, John King.
Lt. Brewer says they found three weapons inside King’s car; a knife, hatchet and loaded 12-gauge shotgun. They also found marijuana and pills inside.
King’s charges include: possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, felony possession of a controlled substance within 1000 feet of a school, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for drugs, possession of a weapon on school campus, carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, 4 counts of possession of schedule II, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The other three students are not being charged at this time, but will face disciplinary action from the school.
New Hanover County Schools Assistant Superintendent, Rick Holliday, says the school was never put on lockdown, because there was no threat and the weapon was in custody of the SRO.
