Six-year-old comes to the rescue

A 6-year old’s quick thinking may have saved her great-grandmothers life.

It’s started as a normal Wednesday afternoon; Mable Davis was cooking breakfast for her great-granddaughter before taking her to school.

That’s when six-year-old Katirah Davis noticed something was wrong with her great grandma.

“She was sweating bad, and she was closing her eyes and she was sweating around her face,” said Katirah.

Mable Davis said, “I asked her to get her coat so I could take her to school, but she never got her coat; she kept going to the front door then to the telephone.”

Katirah ignored her great grandmother. Instead of picking up her coat, she picked up the telephone.

Barbara Smith, Katirah’s great aunt, said, “When she saw that she was in trouble she knew to call her mommy.”

Katirah called her mom, and she and other family members got to the house just in time to take Mable to the hospital.

She’s diabetic and her levels had dropped to a dangerous level, which can cause a coma or death. “I think she’s very smart; she was smart enough to save my life,” Mable said.

Katirah’s family believes that all kids should know 9-1-1 and phone numbers for other family members in case of an emergency. They also believe family illnesses should be shared with kids, so they’ll know that if a person is behaving differently, there may be a problem.
