Small protest targets proposed benefit cuts

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Only a handful of people turned out for a protest at the Social Security Office in Wilmington today.

Organizers expected thousands of Social Security employees at more than 100 offices across the country to protest potential benefit cuts. Protesters don’t want Congress to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits as the country approaches the so-called fiscal cliff, but the demonstrators were not sure what should be cut.

“That’s a good question,” Sandra Stuart said as she protested the Wilmington office. “I really don’t know. I’m going to leave that up to our lawmakers to figure that out.”

Organizers said the goal of the protest was to “save Social Security and Medicare” from extinction.
