Smithfield donates $10K to Red Cross to install house smoke alarms
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In an effort to reduce the number of home fire tragedies in eastern North Carolina, Smithfield Foods donated $10,000 to the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign.
The Red Cross launched its home fire campaign in 2014 and rallied volunteers, donors, and partners to canvass high-risk neighborhoods, install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and help families create escape plans.

This spring, to help save lives and end home fire tragedies, the Red Cross will sound the alarm through a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events in more than 100 high-risk communities in the United States.
James Jarvis, American Red Cross of the Cape Fear area executive director, said this donation is for a large smoke alarm rally to be held next week on Saturday, April 28.
“Donations like this make events like that possible,” Jarvis said.
Volunteers will install hundreds of free smoke alarms into more than 500 homes in Wilmington next Saturday.
