Snow allows Pender County students to sleep in
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Students in Pender County are in luck as they will spend yet another day home from school. It’s not snowing anymore, but Pender County is still feeling the aftermath of our area’s wintry mix.
The icy roads kept the doors of Pender County Schools closed for yet another day.
“I think some businesses and offices will take advantage and open a little late and give time for the roads to clear up a little bit,” said Tom Collins, who is the director for the Pender County Emergency Manangement services. “If the sun comes up that will help us dramatically and get a lot of this stuff off the roads, but it’s going to take a few days.”
As day turned to night in Pender County, students received the good news of snow day number three.
“I was excited,” said Greg Falk,” who is a student in Pender County. “I get to go out again and have friends over and stay up.”
Pender County students consider themselves lucky to have a snow day once a year but having three consecutive snow days when you live in southeastern North Carolina is like a dream. Many parents are headed back to work and have no other choice but to leave their kids at home.
“I hate it because I know they’re going to have to make it up, but I also understand for the ones that have to make the decision they got a lot of lives in their hands and they’re trying to do the best they can,” said Tina Flynn.
While students are looking forward to sleeping in they admit that making up the snow days will not be fun.
Many parents say the kids don’t realize how the snow days could affect their spring break or weekends later in the year.
“They’re not going to like it,” said Flynn. “They are all excited now, but they’re going to hate it later. I think they should just excuse them. I don’t think they should have to make them up because i know they waste enough time in school that they could kind of let this slide.”
Pender County Schools has not announced when students and faculty will make up the snow days.
