WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — While a mixed use development on the old Coca-Cola property covering much of the city block at Ninth and Princess streets can be up to 45 feet tall, it cannot be accessed from North Ninth or Chestnut streets, the result of two decisions made Wednesday by the Wilmington Planning Commission.

The commission approved by a 6-0 vote changes to the city’s urban mixed-use designation, which covers carefully selected corridors of the city, including the area around the former Coca-Cola plant. Those changes increased the maximum height to 45 feet or four stories throughout the district, an increase of 10 feet and one story in residential areas.

After hearing pushback from several of the 65 people in attendance, the planning commission went on to deny a request to change the zoning of some streets around the plant from residential to urban mixed-use. The area in question included half of North Ninth Street between Princess and Chestnut Streets and Chestnut Street between Ninth and 11th streets.
