Southport chief faces additional charge after indictment

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Southport’s police chief now faces an additional charge after a grand jury indictment.

Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David says a grand jury this week indicted Chief Gary Smith and Lt. Michael Simmons on all the charges they were arrested for last month.

The men are accused of working for a trucking company while on the clock for the city.

David says the indictment added one more charge of obtaining property by false pretense against Smith.

The entire Southport Police Department is on leave during an investigation into what happened. Investigators have said officers within the department initially reported the allegations.
