Southport FD: Tractor-trailer crashed into power lines, starts electrical fire

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Southport fire officials say a tractor-trailer pulled down power lines, causing an electrical fire Tuesday afternoon.

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring says it happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Moore and Rhett streets.

Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation is working to turn off the power.

The fire department is working to control the fire.

You are asked to avoid the area.

Police Chief Todd Coring said about 130 people were without power this afternoon. As of 8:30 p.m., Coring said power is restored and the roads are back open. He said internet and cable service is still interrupted due to the equipment destroyed from the fire. Coring said he was told it will not be restored tonight.
