SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — A spokeswoman with the City of Southport confirms 3 people were killed and at least 8 were injured in a shooting Saturday night.

Officials said shots were fired around 9:30 p.m. and 911 calls began to come in shortly thereafter.

ChyAnn Ketchum, Southport’s Public Information Officer, said a boat came up to American Fish Company on Yacht Basin Drive, paused and then opened fire on people at the outdoor bar before heading up the Intracoastal Waterway towards Oak Island.

According to an email from the Town of Oak Island, shortly after 10 p.m., the US Coast Guard saw a person matching the shooter’s description loading their boat at the public boat ramp at NE 55th Street in Oak Island.

The Town of Oak Island said the Coast Guard crew initially detained this person, who is being held by the Oak Island Police Department.

They will be turned over to the Southport Police Department, with the NC State Bureau of Investigation providing additional support.

Multiple agencies responded to the shooting, including Southport Police, Southport Fire, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, SBI, ATF, and the DA’s Office.

The City of Southport will provide the suspect’s identity and charges as they become available.

This is a developing story.

We’ll provide more details as they become available.
