Southport man pleads guilty, sentenced for crash that killed 2

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Southport man will spend up to a dozen years in prison after admitting to a car crash that killed two people.

The District Attorney’s Office says Charles Harvey Lee pleaded guilty to two counts of felony death by vehicle and three counts of felony injury by vehicle. A judge sentenced him to between 9 years 2 months and 12 years in prison for his crimes. The judge also sentenced Lee as a habitual felon.

Lee was charged in a May 2015 crash at the intersection of NC 904 and NC 130 near Ash. The crash killed John Williams, 59, who was a passenger in Lee’s car. It also killed Helen Hicks Bare, 81, who was riding in the other vehicle involved. Three other passengers involved in the crash, one in Lee’s car and two in Bare’s vehicle, were treated for serious injuries following the collision. The crash happened when Harvey failed to stop at the intersection and hit the other vehicle in the southbound lane of NC 130.
