Southport officer investigated by SBI over DWI arrest
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) – A Southport police officer remains on administrative duties while the SBI investigates claims of excessive force.
The allegations are tied to a DWI arrest that happened on November 2.
According to investigators, Officer Nathaniel Taylor arrested Patrick Michael Broskey for DWI, possession of controlled substance inside a jail and for failure to appear warrants.
The following day, the State Bureau of Investigation received a request from District Attorney John David to investigate excessive force claims, according to SBI Public Information Officer Shannon O’Toole.
This is not the first SBI investigation into Officer Taylor. O’Toole says the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office asked the SBI to investigate allegations of assault involving Officer Taylor on August 24, 2015. O’Toole said those allegations could not be substantiated and the investigation was closed.
Taylor became a full-time Southport Police Officer in 2012. Before that, he worked as a reserve officer.
