Southport Police Department employee arrested

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — An employee of the Southport Police Department was arrested early Saturday morning for allegedly impersonating an officer.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office 45-year-old Anthony Early Buntyn has been charged with felony dissemination of obscenities and impersonation of a law enforcement officer.

Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove told WWAY that Buntyn was a clerk for the department, and had also served as the department chaplain in the past. Dove says that at this Buntyn has been suspended with pay pending the results of an internal review by his department and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

Dove says that he hopes to speak with Buntyn on Monday about the charges.

Buntyn is being held on a $10,000 bond at the Brunswick County jail at this time.
