Southport Police to resume operations this week

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — More than three months after the entire department was put on leaves and its two top officials arrested, Southport police will return for duty this week.

Former Mayor Pro Temp and Deputy Todd Coring was named police chief after the termination of Gary Smith and Michael Simmons.

The two men were charged with working a second job while on the clock to patrol the city.

Coring announced over the weekend that police officers will resume their regular patrols starting Monday morning.
