Southport to receive donated water rescue device through FPTower initiative

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The City of Southport will soon add a new piece of lifesaving equipment to its emergency response arsenal after being selected as the top-voted coastal community in FPTower Inc.’s 2026 Save A Life Raffle.
The city earned the donation of a U Safe remote-controlled, self-propelled rescue lifebuoy. The device will be formally presented during a special ceremony at Waterfront Park later this month.
Designed to enhance waterfront safety and improve emergency response efforts, the U Safe rescue device is engineered to quickly reach swimmers in distress. Operated remotely, the high-speed buoy allows first responders to assist people in the water while reducing risk to rescue personnel.
Southport secured the donation after receiving the highest number of votes in FPTower Inc.’s community-based raffle initiative. In the program, each raffle ticket purchased counted as votes toward a nominated coastal community. Southport was one of only four communities selected to receive the lifesaving equipment.
“This achievement reflects the incredible support and engagement of our community,” Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said. “We are grateful to everyone who participated in voting and helped bring this important safety resource to Southport.”
The Save A Life Raffle serves a dual purpose by supporting waterfront safety while raising funds for FPTower Inc.’s broader mission. According to the nonprofit organization, proceeds from the raffle help fund educational programming, environmental research and restoration efforts.
“We are not simply preserving Frying Pan Tower,” said Richard Neal, executive director of FPTower Inc. “We are transforming it into a platform that advances safety, science and sustainability for generations to come.”
Additional details about the public presentation ceremony at Waterfront Park are expected to be announced at a later date.
