Special Olympics athletes ball out at Trask Coliseum
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–New Hanover County Special Olympics athletes and volunteers hit the court at Trask Coliseum for some fun earlier Wednesday.
For volunteers like Ryan St. Clair, spending the morning shooting hoops with Special Olympics athletes is meaningful. “It’s really rewarding for everyone involved,” St. Clair said.
“It’s important for me personally to be a part of this for my own growth and it’s good to experience new things and help people out. I am learning just as much as anybody else here,” St. Clair said.
And St. Clair could pick up some tips from James Meehling, a Special Olympics athlete who has been playing for awhile now. “Probably basketball because that’s what i first started, i would say that’s my top one,” Meehling said.
“I think it’s fun and it lets you enjoy playing sports and getting to know different people, also being with people that you care about,” Meehling said.
The New Hanover County Special Olympics organization is always looking for volunteers.
Their next big event will be a track meet on April 22nd at the UNCW track and field.
