St. Mary Catholic School celebrates Fat Tuesday
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Quite a few people are celebrating Mardi Gras across over the country. Here, students and staff at Saint Mary Catholic School celebrated Fat Tuesday and marked the beginning of Lent with a parade and bead toss.
Festivities kicked off surrounded around Clifton’s tree for a prayer.
“It all started with our Clifton Lively who worked here and was from Louisiana, New Orleans, and got us started doing it all,” teacher Tracy Cordon said.
Lively was known as “Mr. Mardi Gras” and initiated the school’s Fat Tuesday celebration.
The middle school band led fellow students for a parade around the block followed by a bead toss.
“It’s something different that we do,” Cordon said. “You know it’s a day that nobody wants to miss or be absence even if they are not feeling well, nobody wants to miss that day. It’s special.”
Cordon says it’s one of the things special about the school.
“Let’s have fun today,” she said. “Let’s be a little crazy. Let’s listen to the music. Let’s put class aside and sort of have a party with before we get into the seriousness of Lent.”
Cordon says this is the last big celebration for the students before Lent starts tomorrow.
