State, federal agencies to protect land near Jordan Lake

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Several North Carolina government agencies and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have signed an agreement to protect 8,000 acres of land around Jordan Lake.

The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources said in a news release Friday that the deal will preserve the property in its current condition. The deal will help protect an ecosystem that includes rare plants and animals.

Jordan Lake is a reservoir that provides drinking water to Cary, Apex, Durham and other parts of the Triangle.

The agreement includes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – which owns the land – the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the N.C. Forest Service.

All of the groups will help manage the property.
