State lawmakers to vote on new Pender and New Hanover County districts

State lawmakers are expected to vote next week on a new map of House districts for New Hanover and Pender counties.

Thursday, a special House committee approved a plan to redraw the lines for the 18th District represented by Democrat Sandra Spaulding Hughes, and the 16th District represented by Republican Carolyn Justice.

The full House is scheduled to discuss the plan Monday. The final map would go into effect for elections next year.

The change comes after the US Supreme Court ruled the 18th District an unconstitutional minority-influence district.
