Stocking away record breaking One-Day Blitz donations
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — WWAY’s One-Day Blitz benefiting the Salvation Army was a major success, with your help it shattered records making it the number one food drive in the nation for Krispy Kreme.
Thursdays event was all about helping families in need, something Wilmington Early College High School student Adaya Ford wants to do.
“Some people is not able to get food and just people giving food is just amazing, and it shows that some people have a heart in this world,” Ford said.
With your help WWAY collected more than 25,000 pounds of food and nearly $700 for the Salvation Army. A successful event that makes Major Richard Watts very proud.
“You get a great sense of pride and of course joy but pride in the fact that we have such a wonderful community that is so generous that thinks of other people,” Watts said.
Major Watts says the food collected can feed roughly 7,000 families this holiday season. Families students from the Wilmington Early College High School are helping out by organizing the donations.
“I like giving back to my community because they’ve given a lot to me and being that I do have time I feel like I should and need to give back to my community,” student, Bryanna Mcclendis said.
Giving back, a lesson business teacher Dwight Findlay says can only be taught outside the classroom.
“I think it’s an extremely important part of their education. Not just they’re learning things that Wilmington Early College in the classroom but we also want to teach them the importance of volunteering and really giving back to the community,” Findlay said.
Giving back for the holidays, something that would not be possible without the people of Wilmington and Krispy Kreme for donating almost 16,000 donuts to make the food drive possible.
The food collected will be distributed to families and those in need the week before Christmas. Major watts says this food should last until the spring.
