Storm debris pickup information
Tropical storm Hanna’s winds snapped plenty of tree limbs across the area, and not all debris is being treated equally.
Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover counties have places where people can get rid of their debris, but some of those places require a fee.
One Bolivia resident, Richard McCarthy, said, “There was wind damage, a tree fell on a gentleman’s home, but those things happen.”
Tropical storm Hanna is long gone but she left a mess behind.
“The rainfall was very minimal. The biggest problem was the wind.”, said McCarthy.
He says Hanna’s strong winds broke several tree limbs in his neighborhood.
Stephanie Lewis, a Brunswick County official stated, “As of this morning our county made a decision to waive tipping fees on storm related yard debris at our county landfill site.”
The county’s $22.50 fee has been erased now through next Saturday, which coincides with Brunswick County’s free dump week starting Monday.
McCarthy said, “But if you’ve been to the landfill and you’ve taken your own car, you know that it’s an experience. You’re better off taken a truck.”
Carolina Beach and Wilmington city residents who already pay for solid waste pick-up can put their debris curbside for pickup at no additional charge.
However, that’s not the case for all.
New Hanover county residents aren’t so lucky. They have to hire someone to pick up their debris.
Garden’s by Barton in New Hanover County will pick up a truckload of your debris and dispose it for 75 dollars. Other places around town require you to drop it off for mulching. Some of the rates are as low as 15 dollars.
In Pender County, running dear landfill off highway 210 will charge fifteen dollars.
Columbus County residents can drop their debris off at their nearest recycling center. Bladen County residents can call their solid waste center at 645-4279.
