Storm expected to bring snow to NC mountains

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Forecasters say a storm system developing in the Gulf of Mexico could bring a white Christmas in advance to the North Carolina mountains.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for a handful of counties around and north of Asheville.

Forecasters say a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain should move into the mountains and foothills during Friday, with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected by the time the storm moves up the Atlantic coast on Saturday.

The weather service says the northern mountains of North Carolina should see snow, too, and areas in lower elevations along and west of Interstate 85 in North and South Carolina could see snowflakes or sleet mixed with a cold rain.
