Street Turkeys program aims to help feed needy on Thanksgiving

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Many of us are preparing for a Thanksgiving feast tomorrow, but there are people in our community who can’t afford it. A men’s group from Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church is doing something about it.

The Street Turkey program is collecting food all over New Hanover County to help restock the shelves of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. From there, the food is going to 83 different charities in our area to feed the less fortunate this holiday season.

“Most of us don’t really know how hungry some people can get, and we’re trying to help alleviate the hunger that some people have that can’t do better for themselves than most of us are able to do,” volunteer Bill Traina said.

Their goal is 20,000 pounds of food. Volunteers will be outside Harris Teeters until 7 p.m.
