Student shot near N. Brunswick High School
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Leland Police are investigating a shooting reported near North Brunswick High School.
School officials say the incident happened in front of the campus. The call came in at around 10 a.m.
The victim, a student, is currently at the hospital with detectives, but police say he hasn’t identified his shooter. Police say his injuries are not life-threatening.
The school was not under lockdown at any time. Brunswick County Schools spokeswoman Jessica Swencki says that’s because the first report to law enforcement came about 45 minutes after the shooting from the hospital, where the victim was taken and already undergoing treatment.
“At that point when law enforcement came to the campus to start their investigation, there was no threat to our students’ safety at all,” Swencki. “We base our lockdowns on status on threat, on a threat assessment so, there was no threat. Our students are safe.”
According to student Jason Garcia, no school administrators informed them about the incident.
“I’m surprised they didn’t like announce it or anything,” Garcia said. “I heard a lot of people getting called out. I was kind of scared.”
NBHS parent Becky Jacobs agreed.
“They should let parents know more and lock down the school when stuff like this happens,” Jacobs said. “It could have been a terrorist out here and we would have never known it. They could have got in the school and shot the school up.”
Jacobs says when it comes to her children, she would have liked to see more security.
“There should have been a lockdown as soon as they knew something,” Jacobs said. “It could have been my child. It could have been my kid.”
