Students pack 20,000 meals to feed children across the world

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — 20,000 packets of food in less than two hours. That’s what students from Wilmington Christian Academy spent their morning assembling.

The kids worked hard this morning to pack meals for children across the world. The event was part of the Feed the Hunger’s “Pack-A-Thon.”

The students also raised the $4,500 to make this event happen. Students were bussed to the Northside Church’s gym to package meals to send to children all the way in Bangladesh.

An organizer says more than 100 students participated in the service project.

One student says this is her first year helping. She says this opportunity has done more than just help children around the world.

“We love doing things that build our community here in our school and here in Wilmington,” Gloria Macedo said. “After Hurricane Florence, we’ve been trying to come together and do lots of fun, special activities. It’s great to just unite for such a great cause like this. It’s really great to just unite as a class, as a school.”

Macedo says they have been raising money to put this event on since the beginning of February.

The school’s secondary principal says feed the hunger helps organize meals to send to children in other third world countries like Haiti and Sri Lanka. He says they have done this event several times since 2012.
