Students upset with UNCW’s decision to hold classes
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Classes are back in session at UNCW today, but many students and parents are upset with the decision. They say conditions were not safe enough for students to travel back to campus after flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew.
UNCW alerted students yesterday morning that classes would resume today. Kyle Flechsig and his roommate took video of their drive back from Pinehurst yesterday, when they ran into flooded roads in Whiteville. Flechsig says they were detoured to two other highways before making it back to Wilmington.
Flechsig says, “I know that we were really scared when we were driving through 2 feet of on a major highway that was previously just a stream.” He adds that there has been a lack of efficient communication from the school.
In a statement on Facebook UNCW said, “If you are unable to return for class, contact your instructor. Faculty will work with students on a case-by-case basis to accommodate those experiencing hardship as a result of Hurricane Matthew.”
Parents and students alike commented on the post shared by UNCW that they had big concerns for student safety.
