Students learn about nation’s history on Constitution Day

WILMINGTON — Monday is Constitution Day and students nationwide are learning about our nation’s history.

Federal law requires schools that receive federal funding to teach students about the constitution Monday, the day it was signed in 1787.

Pine Valley Elementary School marked the day with plays, fun activities and having kids dress up in red, white and blue.

Constitution day was first recognized in schools about two years ago after an alarming number of students did not know how they felt about the first amendment or they took it for granted.

The kids at Pine Valley definitely impressed with their knowledge of our country’s history.

Fifth-grader Martin Hamlet said, “Benjamin Franklin was actually the oldest person to actually sign the constitution and he was also one of our founding fathers. He was 81 when he signed the constitution.”

Mrs. Flowers’s third grade class has even created its own preamble to follow at school.

The kids really were excited to be learning about the constitution and US history. Some even encouraged anyone who doesn’t know their stuff to head to the library and look it up in books.
