Summer vacation means more hungry children

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Summer is here and school’s out, but that means many children in the Cape Fear will be missing out on meals.

“Many kids rely on two meals a day from their school,” said Beth Gaglione, with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Recently, the food bank kicked off their 9th annual Stop Summer Hunger campaign in hopes to provide 3.3 million meals to children and families across the state.

“We may think about family vacations and catching fireflies and all the things that remind us of summer as a child, but we have to remember that there are families that summer is a very vulnerable time for them,” Gaglione said.
