Summer camps in New Hanover County

UNCW kicked off its summer-long Marinequest Camp on Monday. The Sea Squirt program is geared toward the younger crowd — introducing them to everything ocean related from marine habitats to shell fish.

Marinequest program coordinator Jeremy Burnett said, “Our summer camps are a lot of fun, they are packed in with a lot of experimental education, but they’re also filled with opportunities for kids to explore on their own.”

Full day sessions can be pricey so the camp is also offering half-day sessions for $125 for ages five and six, five days a week. Plenty of spots are still open. For more information call 962-3195.

The City of Wilmington is hosting an adventure day camp at the Martin Luther King Center. It starts June 16 and runs through August. The programs offer everything from arts and crafts to athletics. This camp will set you back just $25 a week.

City of Wilmington recreations manager Travis Adams said, “This is the communities rec center and it’s our responsibility to provide good quality and effective programs and at the same time be cost effective.”

The New Hanover County Arboretum is hosting a camp for mentally and physically disabled children. The camp will get kids outdoors to learn about nature and how to garden. The special camp is offered at a special price — free.

Cooperative Ext. Program director Beth-Ann Scisco said, “We offer gardening opportunities where we take advantage of adaptive techniques and tools to allow everyone to do gardening regardless of their abilities.”
