Sunset Beach Town Council holds first meeting of the year

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (WWAY) — The Sunset Beach Town Council held a community meeting yesterday, giving residents a chance to ask questions and make suggestions to improve the coastal community.

Sunset Beach Residents were asked to show up and speak out at the first community meeting since the new year.

Topics brought up included bike lanes, the parking during the summer time and the storm management system. however the biggest concern was dredging.

Sunset Beach mayor Robert Forrester understands why there are mixed feelings about dredging but wants everyone to understand there is a plan and the difficulties that go into it.

“When we talk about dredging, we’re using one umbrella to talk about very specific issues, cause there’s different characteristics of that area that have to be dealt with,” Forrester said.

Attendees also voiced the importance of flood zone mapping for the area and the inclusion of ramps at the beach for those physically handicapped.

Mayor Forrester said the meeting was a step in the right direction.

“Anytime you give the public an opportunity to participate, i think it’s constructive,” said Forrester

According to the town council, the dredging plan is estimated to be around four point two million dollars.
