Surf City to begin pushing sand

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) —  In response to beach erosion, Surf City town leaders say they are going to begin a beach dune push this week.

Mayor Zander Guy said in an e-mail that it is a protective measure to continue efforts for a beach nourishment project. Guy said contractors will begin this week with the intention of starting on the south end of the Town and moving north.

The mayor said depending on weather and tides, the work is intended to be complete by mid January.  He said the contractor is only allowed to push from three hours before low tide, to three hours after low tide, to get the maximum amount of sand possible.

Town staff will be monitoring the beach push.  The Town will not be moving sand fencing. Guy said homeowners are encouraged to move that if they wish.

He also said the town is working on plans for the next vegetative debris/ yard waste pick up and will be announcing that soon as well.
