Suspect caught in Pisgah National Forest manhunt

The suspect that launched a six day manhunt spanning two counties is now in custody.

Phillip Michael Stroupe II was taken into custody in McDowell County around 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

According to McDowell County Sheriff Dudley Greene, Stroupe was captured on Highway 70 west of Marion, in the Pleasant Gardens community.

Greene says Stroupe was first sighted in Yancey County on Highway 80 coming into McDowell County. He says Stroupe tried to evade officers, they deployed stop sticks to end the chase.

Stroupe was considered armed and dangerous after officials say he escaped initially by stealing a mountain bike at gunpoint.

Access restrictions to Pisgah National Forest derailed visitors’ plans and disrupted local businesses.
