BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has identified a suspect in an incident involving the distribution of anti-Semitic fliers in Carolina Shores.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, warrants have been issued for the suspect, but they have not yet been served. The warrants that have been taken out are for four counts of misdemeanor littering.

The investigation began after hundreds of Carolina Shores residents received the controversial fliers on Wednesday. The fliers were distributed to the homes of close to five-hundred people.

Town Administrator Chad Hicks said as soon as Town Hall began receiving calls Thursday morning, officials were quick to collect and discard them.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says many people have inquired if this incident would be considered a hate crime, but in s statement, the Sheriff’s Office says, “While the actions of the individual are indeed hateful, they do not constitute or meet the statutory elements of a hate crime, or ethnic intimidation as it is referred to in N.C. law.”

The statement went on to say, “We are grateful that no person was hurt and no property was damaged as a result of this incident” and “thank you to our community for all the tips and information provided which helped identify this suspect.”
