Suspect in Marine case likely hiding

JACKSONVILLE (AP) — Authorities say a 20-year-old pregnant Marine who disappeared last month near died from a head injury.

The finding announced today by Onslow County medical examiner Dr. Charles Garrett rejects the claims of the key suspect in the death of Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach that she killed herself.

Authorities found her burned remains and those of her unborn child over the weekend in a fire pit in the back yard of Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean in Jacksonville.

Lauterbach had accused Laurean of rape.

Authorities think Laurean fled Jacksonville on Friday, after leaving a note in which he admitted burying her body but saying she killed herself.

Sheriff Ed Brown says he thinks Laurean may be in hiding, but wouldn’t say if he thought Laurean is in Mexico.
