WATCH: Duke Energy implodes final boiler at old Sutton Plant

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you heard a boom or felt a rumble this morning, there’s a good reason.

Duke Energy imploded the final of three boilers at the Sutton Steam Plant near Wilmington this morning.

The equipment was used to burn coal to make steam, which powered turbines to generate energy for customers across the Carolinas.

The implosion removes the last Duke Energy coal plant in Eastern NC, and brings to seven the number of coal plants that have been demolished in the Carolinas in the last five years.
