Swim race honors accident victim

Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — A local family and the entire Cape Fear swimming community will never forget February 2009. That’s when a young swimmer died in a morning car accident.

Her name was Ryan Young. She was a UNCW student; she coached for a Wilmington swim league and worked part-time at Starbucks.

Now everyone can honor her memory by participating in the Pier-2-Pier Swim Race Saturday, September 15, 2012.

Ryan’s sister, Machelle Young, and the local YMCA Aquatics Director, Joe Herzberg, joined Good Morning Carolina anchor Ashley Jacobs on set to discuss the upcoming event. To find out just how meaningful it is to Ryan’s family, watch the whole interview.
