Teacher assistants to remain salaried employees after school board vote

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Teacher assistants in New Hanover County will remain salaried employees instead of switching to an hourly pay schedule.

This morning, the Board of Education voted to keep their current TAs and clerical staff on a salaried pay schedule, a New Hanover County Schools spokeswoman confirmed.

Some teacher assistants raised concerns about becoming hourly employees over worries that their irregular paychecks would make it hard to pay monthly bills.

Some TAs at year-round schools would have seen their paychecks vary greatly, going from as little as $550 a month to as high at $2200 a month.

Earlier this year, the school board voted to make TAs hourly employees to help ease the bus shortage issue. New TAs will be required to drive school buses, which led to the change in pay schedule. Going forward, new TAs who are hired will be on the hourly plan.
