Teacher faces 28 more child sex crime charges, 10 additional victims reported


NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Isaac Bear Early College High School teacher accused of sex crimes with students now faces even more charges.

Michael Kelly, 48, appeared in court Tuesday afternoon on 28 more charges relating to 10 new alleged victims dating back to 2013. Kelly now faces a total of 32 charges involving a dozen alleged victims.

Kelly was arrested earlier this month and charged with indecent liberties with a student and sexual exploitation of a minor.

Kelly’s new charges include 16 counts of indecent liberties with a student, five counts of indecent liberties with a child, statutory sex offense with a child, two counts solicitation to commit, and several counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Warrants reveal more details about the alleged crimes. Among the accusations in the arrest warrants, Kelly performed oral sex on a boy while recording it. He is also accused of showing five teens a picture of another teen naked.

Kelly was allegedly in a private Snapchat group with students and shared naked images, exposed himself to a student in a restroom on campus, and sent texts of naked images.

He is in the New Hanover County Detention Center under a $1.5 million bond.

The prosecutor said in court Tuesday that Kelly is expected to be indicted before his next court appearance, which is on June 7.

At last check, New Hanover County Schools said Kelly was suspended without pay.
