Teacher of the Week: Renee Bailey

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – In college Renee Bailey hoped to become a school librarian. Seven years into her career, she now wears several hats at Topsail High School.

Her official title is librarian/media coordinator, but her list of duties is much longer.

“I do a lot of helping students troubleshoot with printing or doing papers,” she says. “There’s also technology. If teachers have issues with computers, I’m there to help.”

Then of course, there are the basics.

“Probably my favorite part is interacting with students, especially when I can help students find books,” she says.

Nominated several times over, students say she’s more than a teacher. She’s like a counselor and sometimes a mom.

“I’ve always had a connection with kids,” Mrs. Bailey says. “This is like a safe haven, I call it, because all students are welcome in here. If I can make a difference in a student’s life, I think that’s just one of the most amazing things.”

Mrs. Bailey says she’s surprised to be teacher of the week because she doesn’t teach in a traditional classroom.
