Teen charged after security guard assaulted at Landfall fireworks show

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 17-year-old has been charged in connection with a serious assault during the Fourth of July holiday weekend in the Landfall community.
Wilmington Police Department detectives charged the juvenile with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury. Because the person charged is a juvenile, police said their name will not be released.
The assault happened Friday night during the Independence Day fireworks celebration at the Country Club of Landfall. Witnesses said several young adults, who were not believed to be members of the community, were seen running and riding bicycles toward the back of the crowd before an altercation broke out near Hole 1 on the golf course.
During the incident, a security guard identified as Russell James attempted to intervene and was punched in the eye.
Police said the case remains an open and active investigation, and more charges are expected.
