Teen who died of muscular dystrophy honored with memorial fund

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington teen who had muscular dystrophy left behind a legacy of advocacy after he died this past spring. And Thursday night he was honored with a memorial fund.

Before his death Justin Verzaal was an advocate for muscular dystrophy research and support for others with the disease.

Thursday night, his supporters came together at the Miracle Field in Wilmington where a memorial fund in honor of Justin was presented.

Justin created a power hockey team for those in wheelchairs called the Hotwheels. They played at the Miracle Field.

Christian Verzaal, Justin’s mother, said his last wish was to be able keep Hotwheels going.

She said in lieu of flowers after his passing they asked for donations. She said they collected $6,500 for the program to continue at Miracle Field. Miracle Field is a field that caters to those with disabilities

“Well he just wanted to be able to play a sport like everyone else. And that is what this whole field embodies,” said Verzaal. “So I just feel like this dream is going to live on.”

Verzaal said the accessible wheel chair team will continue competing in the fall. She said they hope more people will participate. She said people without disabilities are also welcome to play.
