Temperatures reach 90s Friday
WILMINGTON — Temperatures were in the 90s again Friday and for some people, that’s dangerously high.
This week New Hanover County Regional Medical Center has seen an increase in people with heat-related illnesses.
ER Dr. Ken Garm says each summer it’s just a matter of time before over-heated people become patients at the hospital.
While the elderly is a group often affected by the heat, Dr. Garm says he’s seen a lot young people recently. They’re the ones who are outside, being active and often over-doing it.
Friday’s temps still didn’t stop people from being outside. Everyone had a his or her own way to stay cool.
Cyclist Jeff Mulligan was training for a triathlon. He said, “Hydrate before, stretch before, stretch afterwards, hydrate a lot afterwards, a lot of water, a lot of Gatorade, other products like that. And then just rest in the off hours and don’t do anything silly.”
Mulligan biked ten miles in the middle of the day while the sun was at its highest.
The breeze at the beach was one thing bringing many people relief Friday.
