Testimony continues in TRU Colors trial

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Opening testimony continued Wednesday in the double-murder trial connected to the 2021 shooting at the home of a former TRU Colors Brewing executive, as a surviving victim described waking up after being shot.
M’Kaila Walker took the stand in New Hanover County Superior Court during the trial of Dyrell Green and Omonte Bell, who are charged in connection with the deaths of Briyanna Williams and Koredreese Tyson.
The shooting happened July 24, 2021, at the home of George Taylor III, the former chief operating officer of TRU Colors Brewing. The brewery, which shut down in 2022, employed active gang members as part of an anti-violence initiative.
Walker testified she was in a romantic relationship with Tyson at the time of the shooting and was inside the home when the incident occurred. She told jurors she did not hear gunshots, but woke up in pain and realized she had been shot.
During cross-examination, defense attorneys questioned Walker about why she did not ask for help for Tyson after the shooting.
“I already knew he was deceased,” Walker testified.
Defense attorneys also continued efforts to distance Green and Bell from both the shooting scene and an altercation the night before at a Taco Bell where Williams and Walker worked.
Walker testified she never identified who shot her to law enforcement and said it was dark inside the room during the shooting. She told jurors she did not see anyone else in the room with her and Tyson at the time.
Additional witnesses are expected to testify when the trial resumes Thursday morning at the New Hanover County Courthouse.
