Texas remains on the ready for Hurricane Dean’s effects

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas officials are keeping a watchful eye on Hurricane Dean as they continue to prepare for its possible effects.

The mayor of South Padre Island says a declaration of a state of emergency will remain in effect, with town emergency management officials on the ready.

The National Guard and search-and-rescue teams have been mobilized in case of the worst. Shelters have been set up in 28 communities. And as many as 80,000 barrels of gasoline have been shipped to Rio Grande Valley gas stations.

The governor warns people living near the coast to get their house and belongings in order and gather the important documents they need in the event of an evacuation.

Forecasters say the now Category 3 storm's outer bands could bring heavy rain, flooding and gusty winds to the Rio Grande Valley in the next two days.
