Thalian Association celebrates state recognition

A part of Wilmington's arts community celebrated a prestigious statewide honor Thursday night.

Over the summer the state legislature named the Thalian Association the State Community Theater of North Carolina honoring a legacy that dates back to 1788.

"Being designated the State Community Theater of North Carolina is not only something we're really proud of," Thalian Association Executive Director Tom Briggs said, "but it's another feather in Wilmington's cap."

Secretary of State Elaine Marshall was part of last night's celebration. She said the designation of State Community Theater is not one that is given lightly.

"This is truly unique," Marshall said. "But what this really means is that it's honoring a tradition of inspiring people, helping children, healing a community, all the things that the performing arts and an association to support that can mean."

Mayor Bill Saffo declared yesterday Thalian Association Day in the City of Wilmington as part of the celebration.
