The 12th Annual Kid’s Triathlon was another success

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Ready, set, go! Kids of all ages running, swimming, and biking to the finish line. The YMCA held their 12th Annual Kid’s Triathlon Saturday morning. Children demonstrated strength and endurance through the course with friends and family cheering them on.

11-year-old competitor Hannah Elkssmith says “It makes me feel really good being out here and competing.”

Every age division had a different distance course. This isn’t a first for some like 12-year-old Luke Scacheri.
He explained his course consisted of “200 meter swim which is 8 laps in the pool, and then a 3- mile bike, and a 2 mile run.”

Girls on the Run & Stride Council Director, Amber Rogers says the Kid’s triathlon is a step to get kids in a healthy mindset for the future. “It’s so awesome to learn at a very young age so that they can carry it on throughout their whole lifetime. That’s kind of our goal at YMCA, which is get them young and get them out here training for triathlons.”

Rogers has been working at the YMCA for many years now and each year she’s sees a difference in kids who compete in events like these. She expressed, “Watching them run their heart out and achieve this huge goal of swim, biking, and running. They are many adults that can’t even do this so for a kid to come out here and do this and achieve that huge goal I think it does wonders to their self-esteem.”

This reflected on participants like Elksmith who recently was invited to Iron Kids competitions. “It was just really fun, and it was hard but you are really proud of yourself after,” Elkssmith said.
