The schooner America sails into Wrightsville Beach for the weekend
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) –A bit of history sailed into Wrightsville Beach Friday morning.
Dozens gathered as the America made its way to shore. The 139 foot ship is a replica of the 1851 schooner America that won one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, the America’s Cup.
Not only is it the most famous racing yacht in history, its also a worldwide treasure.
Charlotte Crockett, member Carolina Yacht Club said, “I just hope people come out and see her, ya know take a tour. It’s open to the public through Monday, and I hope a lot of people take advantage of the fact that we have such a unique experience for them here for them to enjoy.”
The America’s stop in Wrightsville Beach is part of an East Coast and Caribbean tour led by Captain Troy Sears. He hopes the tour will inspire others to test out the ocean waters.
“I was inspired one time by going sailing,” Sears said, “and if we can touch the hearts of some of these kids who come on board and inspire them to have a future in sailing, then it was well worth the effort.”
This is just one of many stops the ship will make on its way to Bermuda for the 2017 America’s Cup.
