WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — If you’ve been boating around Wrightsville Beach or visited any of the homes along Lee’s Cut, you’ve probably seen this, a parking meter and a fake palm tree.

This temporary island is known as “The Diminishing Republic”.

While no one knows exactly who is responsible for the sandbar, it was meant to be a humorous stab at the rising parking rates in the town.
