Thousands attend North Carolina Fourth of July Festival Parade in Southport

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Thousands of people packed the streets of Southport on Friday for the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival.

The festival is one of the oldest patriotic festivals in the country, celebrating Independence Day with a full week of events.

The annual parade on Friday brought out families, community groups and patriotic pride.

“We lived here for 53 years, coming for 53 years, all of our family here with us, it’s a family affair for us,” one attendee said.

Flags flew high, and so did spirits as people lined the streets to watch a parade that celebrates the nation’s independence.

“I like today celebrating America, us all being together,” the attendee noted.

For many, the fun isn’t just in watching the parade, it’s in being part of it.

From marching bands and local groups, such as the South Brunswick High School Cheerleading team, who said taking part in the celebration is just as meaningful as cheering from the sidelines.

“People uplifting us, supporting us is amazing, gives us a fresh start to the season,” one of the group of girls said.

“What we bring to the table, what we have to offer — it’s fun to see all the people lined up,” another added.

Southport also hosted a fireworks show on Friday night.
