Three Brunswick County schools dismissing early due to power outage repairs
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Damage to Duke Energy’s transmission lines left more than 4,000 people without power in Brunswick County this morning.
According to Duke Energy’s outage map, the area just north of Boiling Spring Lakes to Southport was without power. But now, outage maps show the power has been restored.
The Brunswick County Schools’s Facebook page posted earlier that the power at South Brunswick High School, South Brunswick Middle School, and Southport Elementary School was out, but power has since been restored to all three schools.
However, Duke Energy told the school district that due to the repair to the transmission system affecting the Southport/Boiling Spring Lakes area, that power to Southport Elementary, South Brunswick Middle and South Brunswick High School will be interrupted.
The school district has decided to dismiss those three schools at 1 p.m.
An email from school spokeswoman Jessica Swencki reads, “We know this is not an ideal situation and we appreciate your assistance with this unexpected, early dismissal. The safety of our students and staff if our top priority. All after-school activities at the schools have been cancelled. Thank you again for your patience and understanding.”
