Cape Fear Memorial Bridge back open after wreck, fuel spill snarl traffic
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is back open after an early-morning crash led to a fuel spill.
A New Hanover County Dispatch supervisor said the bridge officially reopened at 9:49 a.m.
Dispatch said earlier this morning a crash between a tractor trailer and another vehicle on the bridge closed three lanes, including both lanes into Wilmington, after the tractor trailer spilled its fuel onto the bridge and the Cape Fear River below. No injuries were reported. A WPD spokeswoman said there would be no charged filed, as the tractor trailer hit the disabled vehicle.
By 9:30 a.m., the truck had been moved from the bridge, but a back hoe was on the bridge to help with the clean-up.
All traffic had been routed onto US 421 North past the Battleship. To get into Wilmington, drivers had to take the Isabel Holmes Bridge.
Traffic into Wilmington was backed up almost to Mt. Misery Rd. in Brunswick County before 8 a.m. Around 9:30 a.m. traffic was backed up on US 17 to Magnolia Greens in Leland.
